San Miguel de Allende is glowing this holiday season with candles, stars, and Christmas tree lights illuminating the city’s charm. This year, however, December 25 will sparkle even brighter as it marks a rare overlap of two festive traditions: Christmas Day and the first night of Chanukah.
At 5 p.m. on Christmas evening, a large menorah, will be lit in the courtyard of the Parroquia by members of the Jewish Center of San Miguel. Meanwhile, another menorah will be illuminated in Parque Juárez, led by the Chabad Rabbi. Both events will feature treats for attendees, creating a warm and inclusive celebration.
Later in the week, on Sunday, December 29, the two groups will host Chanukah celebrations. These events will include food, games, and collections of donations to support families in need, furthering the spirit of giving during the holidays.
The overlap of Chanukah’s first night with Christmas Day is a rare occurrence, having only happened five times since 1900. This year’s confluence offers a special opportunity to unite diverse traditions in a shared celebration of light and hope.
Adding to the festive atmosphere, the massive Christmas tree in front of the Parroquia will be adorned with lights, as will the creche in El Jardín and the illuminated streets of San Miguel. Catholic celebrations will take place on Christmas Eve, December 24, while the traditional exchange of gifts will happen on Three Kings Day, January 6.
Local Christian communities will also gather for worship. Both the Community Church of San Miguel and St. Paul’s Church will hold Christmas services for their congregants on the morning of December 25.
As darkness falls on Christmas night, the lights of Chanukah and Christmas will glow side by side in the heart of San Miguel. Together, they symbolize a universal message of hope, unity, and light for all San Miguelenses.
