Regenerative Agriculture is a hot 2024 buzz word, but what exactly does it mean on a local level, and does it make a difference?
Regenerative Agriculture is a holistic approach that goes beyond “sustainability,” and seeks to restore and improve systems so that the land and livestock thrive over time, ensuring positive ecological gains each year. This includes using agricultural and grazing practices in alignment with natural systems that rebuild soil and restore degraded soil biodiversity. Historically, industrialized farming practices have relied on monoculture, meaning cultivating only one crop in massive amounts, such as corn or soybeans. These crops are enabled by the use of harmful pesticides and fertilizers, to the detriment of land, soil and community. Combined with the issues and concerns of climate change, and more specifically drought in the SMA area, these so called modern practices have completely depleted soil for continued use, and the lack of water creates an uncertain future for the agricultural center of Central Mexico.
For the past 25 years, Cañada de la Virgen has been dedicated to a circular and regenerative approach of farming that includes reforestation, ecosystem conservation, and sustainable practices that are at the core of operations. The ranch, dating back to the seventeenth century, prioritizes organic farming and does not employ the use of any pesticide, antiparasitic, or synthetic fertilizer or herbicides; the entire ranch has been consecutively certified organic since 2009. The working ranch produces not just exceptional organic grass-fed beef and bone broth, but also some of the best beef jerky in the country, organ capsules, and dog treats, which are sold nationally. There’s also a line of leather jewelry fashioned with agates from the property and the sustainably harvested wild flowers are used to create tea infusions.
The latest addition to the family of products and practices is “Casa Agave San Miguel de Allende, and through this project, the ranch has catapulted its reforestation, livestock hydration and regenerative practices.
REFORESTATION: With the combined efforts of our local farm community, we’ve created a revolutionary program that centers on the native agave as a force for semi-arid regeneration, called Agavesse. By incorporating agaves into a keyline berm system for rainwater harvesting, we have established a symbiotic relationship between plants, water and microorganisms that revitalizes soil health, thereby jumpstarting natural reforestation of the land.
The ranch team has planted 60,000 agave over the past several years, and recently have experienced the powerful benefits of the Agavesse system. The system offers a new way of growing agaves that connects the earth, livestock, and farmers in a circular holistic cycle of health and abundance, and in these times of drought and immense lack of water, we are very grateful to have made the efforts to improve the farm in this manner which keeps the farm sustained. Simply put, the innovative reforestation agave system needs very little water to thrive, is capable of reversing desertification, and is extremely low maintenance.
LIVESTOCK HYDRATION: The agave leaves are harvested, ground into silage, then barreled for fermentation. After about a month in the barrels, the fermented silage is mixed with powdered mesquite for additional nutrition, and is now ready to feed to the cattle. The cows of Cañada are not corn-fed, but they are agave-fed and it’s keeping them sustained so that they are nourished, enabling the cows to nourish their calves. If you care at all about the welfare of cows, this is tremendous cause for celebration, because the current conditions are not ideal for most farmers in Central Mexico.
REGENERATIVE SPIRITS: All things are sacred with Mexico’s maguey agave, and the agave on the ranch are no different. When the end of their life cycle is complete, the agave piñas are harvested and made into ATZIN, the world’s first carbon negative, regenerative mezcal. Regenerative mezcal can reverse climate change, create revenue for farmers, improve livestock health and reinvigorate our biocultural heritage.
