According to Wikipedia, there are over 50 multinational festivals celebrated in December and January: some based on religion, some on pagan rituals and others on cultural traditions. Clearly the holidays mean different things to different people. The year my then-teenaged daughters and I decided to opt out of the commercialism and instead make hampers for less fortunate families, we found our reason for the season. What’s yours? For many folks in town, it’s making this a happier time for others. If that resonates with you, here are a few examples of who they are and how you can help.
Casita Linda: Since 2001, Casita Linda has been building hope, one house at a time and providing dignified and safe environments to empower families to change their lives. In addition to constructing homes, they teach families about health, family planning, family communications skills, water conservation and other vital topics. For more information contact Gabriela Rodríguez at gabriela@casitalinda.org.
Posada: The children of the families served by Casita Linda will participate in a Posada on December 10 at 3:00p.m., in Banda. The parents invite everyone to come and enjoy their tamales and atole. Please meet at the railroad station at 2:30p.m. Free admission.
EdCaminos: For a decade this free, after school tutoring program has helped children unlock their academic potential and develop strong connections to their local heritage. Social skills, collaboration and friendship-building are emphasized. English and chess classes, and summer activities are also offered. Their roster of 30 students, ages 5 to 12 years is full and there’s a waiting list! The program operates Monday through Friday from 4:oop.m. to 6:00p.m. For more information contact Director Sonia Ariaza at saraiza@edcaminos.org.
Pastorela: This Nativity folk drama tells the story of the shepherds or pastores who journeyed to Bethlehem. The cast of students, tutors and alumni of EdCaminos invites everyone to the Angela Peralta Theater on January 2, at 7:00p.m. for this free event. It’s popular, so arrive early.
Feed The Hungry San Miguel: Founded in 1984, they recognize that the future of Mexico depends on the vitality of its children. Their mission is to provide the nutrition that children need to grow and to thrive, and to educate their families on good eating habits. Their holiday appeal campaign seeks donations to underwrite the cost of nutritious lunches for an entire year at $150USD per child. Additionally, donors and volunteers are needed to distribute supplies when school resumes after Día de Reyes. Bags containing a notebook, pencil, pens, crayons, scissors, erasers and a ruler are distributed to 4,200 students in all 38 schools, and the kindergarten and elementary schools in their program. Bag sponsorship is $25USD. Donations may be made through their website at www.feedthehungrysma.org. To volunteer, contact volunteers@feedthehungrysma.org.

Gifts That Give Twice: Charity craft sales abound this month, making it easy to find unique presents for loved ones, while at the same time supporting worthy causes. Another great place to find gifts from the heart with that handmade touch is DeSeñas Gallery in EEESMA School for the Deaf. Students in job training workshops create stunning silver and gemstone jewelry, woodworking projects, leather goods, fabric arts garments and home décor items, available in exchange for modest donations. Each treasure you take home provides financial support directly to the student artisans as well as to the school. DeSeñas is open Fridays during the school year with the last shopping day before the holidays being December 20, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. They are located at Calle Canal #152. Look for the purple and white ribbons.
Wishing you a joyful season, whatever your reason. Happy Holidays!
