This year marks the 69th edition of the Feria de la Candelaria (Candelaria Fair) in San Miguel de Allende. ‘Extranjeros’ think of it as the Candelaria Flower Fair, but for many faithful Sanmiguelenses, February 2 is a celebration of the devotion to the Virgen de La Candelaria.
The devotion to the Virgen de La Candelaria is believed to have originated in the Canary Islands, on Tenerife. According to legend, in 1392, two natives of Tenerife found an image of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus in the right arm while holding a candle in the left hand.
By the middle of the 5th century, this became the “Feast of Lights” celebrated by the faithful and by the 6th century, the custom had spread to Rome, Jerusalem, and other places worldwide, mainly Latino countries.
Starting January 31 and continuing through February 16, this historic and traditional event will take place in Parque Zeferino Gutiérrez at the Northern entrance to the city. Typically, this ‘flower fair’ features over a hundred nurserymen and flower growers from the local area as well as various states across Mexico, bringing a diverse array of plants, seeds, and flowers.
Artisans also display their beautifully handmade flower pots, stands, and decorative landscaping rocks in different colors. Growers bring seeds, herbs, soil, and plant food.
The fair is a wonderful opportunity to meet these passionate growers, learn about their work, and support the local and national horticultural community. It is a celebration of nature and tradition that brings together people from all over to share their love for plants and gardening. Ornamental and fruit trees, exotic plants, succulents and a wide variety of flowers in bloom bring a breath of Spring as we transition from the brisk evenings and mornings of Winter to the warmth and longer days that shout, “Spring has arrived!”
Every pathway is lined with a rainbow of colors. Strolling through these paths lifts the Spirit and provides a fantastic opportunity to enjoy beauty and immerse yourself in the local culture, and support the local economy. Expect a wonderful grand opening and closing, with local artists and musicians participating in a variety of theatrical and musical events throughout the festival.
