The colonial style in central Mexico, at its heart, is an artistic and architectural fusion that originated during the time of Spanish colonization in the sixteenth century. It combines European influences and indigenous elements to create a unique aesthetic that still endures in the region.
In terms of architecture, the colonial style is characterized by its use of local materials, such as quarry and adobe, and by the incorporation of ornate details in facades and doors. Churches and convents are iconic examples of this fusion, with Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance features. Over the centuries, this architecture has evolved towards more sophisticated and eclectic forms, adapting to changing trends and needs. The colonial décor reflects a rich cultural heritage. You can see elements such as hand-painted tiles, carved wooden furniture and very elaborate textiles. Over time, this aesthetic has been modernized, maintaining its essence but incorporating contemporary touches. The mix of old and new creates a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
The colonial lifestyle has also influenced the region. The central patios, known as "colonial patios," were common spaces where families gathered and shared. Today, these spaces remain an integral part of boutique homes and hotels, creating an atmosphere of community and relaxation. The colonial aesthetic endures because it offers a sense of connection to the history and roots of the region. The mix of ancient and contemporary elements creates a visual and emotional harmony that resonates with the locals and attracts visitors as we live in San Miguel de Allende.
