Jaime Colín Brings His Vision To San Miguel De Allende

By Aundria McMillan Humphrey

Mexico City-born contemporary visual artist Jaime Colín is set to debut his exhibition, Geological Spiral: Archives of a Transformed Landscape, in San Miguel de Allende on July 5th. Returning for his second visit to the city, Jaime describes San Miguel as a “pristine” city with fine restaurants, designer stores, and museums—a contrast to Cuernavaca, where he has lived for 23 years. “I’m a little jealous,” he admits.

Jaime's work confronts the environmental devastation caused by human activity. From atomic bomb detonations to mineral excavations, drilling, and open mines, he explores how these actions reshape landscapes. His paintings highlight foreign exploitation of Mexican mines—holes in the earth, pollution, and displacement of communities. He laments the slow implementation of laws meant to protect affected populations.

Jaime says, “I am not a scientist, but I am open to trying to connect such behavior by man to volcanic disruptions and other seismic activity in my work.”  He also sees high consumerism and the use of excessive energy as negatively impacting the environment.

Though some of his imagery is unsettling, Jaime intentionally softens its presentation, making difficult truths more accessible.  He aims for a “soft” way to present what he feels is a devastating and very fragile landscape. He uses the computer to choose and select colors and deliberately uses a color sheet of images from the web to make the images more comfortable for the viewer. His artistic process is informed by cartography, the Anthropocene, and UFO phenomena, deepening his exploration of environmental transformation. While he acknowledges the complexity of these issues, he hopes his San Miguel viewers leave his exhibition with a lasting awareness of humanity’s impact on the planet. Location plays a crucial role in his curatorial choices. He tailors his selections to foster connection and reflection within.

The Geological Spiral: Archives of a Transformed Landscape opening and artist talk will take place on July 5th from 12:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m., with the talk beginning at 2:00 p.m., at a private gallery on Umarán #37.
